Christmas Eve products are 10% more expensive in 2016

RIVER-with Christmas dinner more expensive, but prices of gifts more behaved, the Brazilians will spend the holidays short-handed for the second year, according to projections of the Getulio Vargas Foundation (FGV). Supper products are 10.19% more expensive than last year, while 57.7% of consumers interviewed on consumer Survey say they will spend less on Christmas.
According to the consumer price index (CPI) from FGV in December 2015 period to November 2016, a basket of products typically used in suppers accumulated inflation of 10.19%, against a high of 6.76% on average. The highlights of the period are the olive oil (17.52%), wines (16.95%) and fresh fruits (16.91%).
Already the present had an inflation much more behaved. A list of 23 products that includes items of clothing, appliances, books, among others, the high prices was of 4.23%, during the same period-below average of 6.76%.
Still, families will spend less on gifts. According to a special item used in the questionnaire of the consumer Survey, also from FGV, 57.7% of respondents intend to spend less on gifts last year, while only 5.4% want to spend more. In 2015, these percentages were 61.5% and 5.6%, respectively-the question is placed on all end-of-year poll.
According to the FGV, it signals that the drop in Christmas sales in 2016 may be less than that seen in 2015. The news is not positive, because last year was already registered a 6.3% drop in sales, according to data from the Brazilian Institute of geography and statistics (IBGE).
The FGV study also highlights that the average price of Christmas presents, according to the intentions declared by consumers interviewed, should be in R$ 102.40, considering the average of all income ranges.
