Global consumption of láteos must grow 36% until 2024

Tetra Pak announced on the 1st of October the seventh edition of Dairy Index. The study highlights the opportunities and challenges posed by the growing global demand for dairy products, especially in the next decade, while consumption should surpass the available supply, for the first time in history. The survey shows that, in both emerging and developed dairy markets, producers need to understand the balance to ensure sustainable business success. The Tetra Pak Dairy report Index reveals that it is expected that the global demand for milk grow 36% in the next decade. The increase is mainly due to the increase of the population of greater purchasing power and urbanization in Africa, Asia and Latin America. However, the milk supply and demand are unbalanced across the world. The growing demand for dairy products in emerging markets is unlikely to be met by raw milk produced locally, while developed markets the excess milk produced faces the challenges of competing in foreign markets, in addition to the drop in domestic consumption.
According to Dennis Jönsson, President and CEO of the Tetra Pak Group, it is expected that global demand provides a great opportunity for dairy companies in developed markets and for export of long life dairy products and powder for growing economies. "However to ensure success in the long term, these producers need to balance rapid export gains and the need to continue growing in the domestic markets," says Dennis.
On the other hand, the Executive claims that markets industries importers need to overcome the challenges to ensure a sustainable supply of high-quality milk, while meet the growing demand. "Markets such as China and Saudi Arabia are doing this in several ways: increasing investments in national dairy farming, partnering with foreign companies well established, and diversifying the offer with value-added products. Fundamentally, these are measures which will help to achieve the balance vital to the future of a sustainable dairy sector ", concludes CEO.
